Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics
This is a joint venture of the departments of Molecular Biology, Chemistry
and Physics aimed at exploiting the novel intellectual opportunities
presented by the post-genomic era in biology.
Directed by David Botstein,
the
Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics
is housed in the
new Carl C. Icahn
Laboratory, a new building near Physics
and Molecular Biology. The overall theme of its activities is the
development of quantitative and predictive understanding of whole biological
systems, starting with the bacterial cell.
The Institute fosters
collaborative work between people trained in the physical and
mathematical sciences and classically-trained biologists. It
also develops
innovative approaches to graduate and undergraduate education in the new
biology as well as career paths for postdoctoral scientists striking out in
directions that do not fit into the standard academic departments.
The Princeton Physics Department has been a pioneer in the establishment
of fruitful connections between physics and biology, and the Institute
provides scope for a major expansion of this activity.
